Adelaida · California

It grew in a walnut orchard. Now it hosts dinner.

This walnut grew in an orchard in the hills of Adelaida, planted decades ago by a veteran who settled on the Central Coast. When the orchard came out in 2021, we milled and kiln-dried the tree ourselves and built this dining table from it.

The life of this tree

From the orchard to the table, in four stops.

When we know a tree's story, it goes on the record: where it grew, what happened to it, and where it lives now. We know more about this one than most.

  1. Stop 1 · Adelaida

    The tree

A walnut in an orchard in the hills of Adelaida, planted decades ago by a veteran who settled on the Central Coast. That orchard watched Paso go from orchard country to wine country. It came out in 2021, and this tree came to us.

  2. Stop 2 · Mill and kiln

    Milled and dried

We milled the log into slabs and kiln-dried them ourselves before any of it went to the shop. Drying first keeps a top from moving much once it's in a house, though walnut, like any wood, still moves a little with the seasons.

  3. Stop 3 · The shop

    The build

The top is four bookmatched slabs from the same tree, set side by side in one long, narrow top, square at the ends, with the edge beveled back underneath so the thick top reads thin. Under it, a hand-hammered metal base: a leg at each end leaning out, two crossing in an X under the middle, and a strut from each end to the center. The base is asymmetrical and a little off balance, with a hand-hammered bronze finish, which makes it as much a piece of art as a support.

    Where it lives now

It's in a client's home now. This is the real table, photographed there in February 2024.
