Your tree

Your tree already has a story. We'll help you keep it.

The walnut on the family property. The oak you grew up climbing. When a tree like that comes down, we can mill it, dry it and build it into something you use every day.

Start wherever you are

Build with it, keep the lumber, or figure it out with us.

Most people who call us about a tree aren't sure yet what they want from it. That's normal.

  • Build something from it

A table, mantel or bar from your own tree, designed with you and built in our shop, with its story kept alongside it.

    Start with your tree
  • Mill and dry it for you

Slabs and lumber from your log, milled at our yard in Paso Robles, then dried so they're ready to work. Quoted per job.

What to send us

A few photos tell us a lot.

Send what you can. We'll look at it and tell you what the tree can become, and what it would take.

  1. Photos

The whole tree or log, the cut end with a tape measure across it, the bark, and where it's sitting.

  2. Where it is

The town or area, and whether a truck can get close to it. Logs come to our yard in Paso Robles to be milled.

  3. What kind of tree

If you know the species, tell us. If you don't, the photos usually do.

  4. How big

Roughly how wide the trunk is across, and how long it is if it's already down.

Not down yet? Talk to us before the crew starts cutting. We can refer an arborist and coordinate with them, and a long trunk gives us far more to work with than firewood rounds.

How it works

From the day it comes down to the day it's in your house.

The same team the whole way through, from the mill and the kiln to the shop and your front door.

    Milling

At our yard in Paso Robles, cut to suit what you want to build. We tag and photograph your wood so it stays yours.

  3. 03 · The kiln

    Drying

Stickered and stacked to air dry, then into the kiln. Drying time depends on the wood, hardwood or softwood, and on how thick it's cut, and a kiln load alone can take one to two months. We'll go over yours at the consult.

    Design and build

Walk your slabs with us and choose the ones for your piece. You see the design before anything is cut, then we build it in wood and steel.

The honest part

This is the slow way to get a table. Fresh wood has to dry before we can build with it, so a piece from your own tree takes longer than one from our yard.

From log to finished piece usually takes 12 to 18 months, and most of that is drying.

From a client's own tree

“Such an awesome addition with sentimental value. This walnut came from our Santa Rosa Creek Road Property. Wonderful keepsake item that will last for generations.”

Own-tree questions

What people ask before they call.

Is my tree good enough for furniture?

Maybe. It depends on the species, the size and what's going on inside the log. Send photos of the cut end, the bark and the whole log, and we'll tell you honestly, including when it's not worth milling.

Will I get my own wood back?

Yes, that's the whole point. The slabs from your tree go into your piece, or back to you as lumber. We tag and photograph your wood so it stays yours.

How much lumber will I get out of it?

That depends on the diameter, the length and how much of the log is sound. Once we've seen it, we can estimate the board feet before we cut.

The tree is still standing. Can you take it down?

We refer an arborist and coordinate with them, so the whole process is smooth. Call us before the crew starts: a long trunk gives us far more to work with.

Can you mill it where it is?

No, we don't offer mobile milling. Logs come to our yard in Paso Robles, which takes logs up to 55 inches wide and 17 feet long. If yours can't be moved, call Shelby Sanchez for mobile milling at (805) 325-9288.

How far do you deliver?

We schedule delivery across California and beyond. Ask us about yours, and we'll quote it with the job.

How long does the whole thing take?

From log to finished piece, usually 12 to 18 months, and most of that is drying. Fresh wood has to dry before we can build with it, and how long that takes depends on the species, hardwood or softwood, and the thickness. A kiln load alone can take one to two months. We'll go over it at the consult and give you a real timeline once we've seen the log.

What does it cost?

Every own-tree job is quoted on its own: the milling, the drying and the piece itself all depend on the tree. Send photos and we'll tell you what it would take.
