Two slabs of coast live oak, joined by a black river.

This coast live oak came down at Santa Rita Creek Ranch in Templeton. We set two slabs of it with their live edges facing each other and joined them with a river of black resin down the full length. The top stands on two black steel trestles.

    The top and the base

The oak is heavily figured, with silvery ray fleck, dark filled checks and a few knots. The river follows the live edges, so it pinches narrow in places and opens up near the middle, and it shows as a black band on both ends. Each trestle is black steel: a center post, a long foot with angled ends, and four braces that cross in an X.
