Round dining table · Redwood
The round redwood table
A lazy Susan set flush into a redwood top, on a cross base of two interlocking slabs.
The lazy Susan sits flush in the top, and the grain and sapwood stripes run straight across it. Turned square, it reads as one piece of wood.

How the table is built
The top
Wide redwood boards make up the top. Two narrow stripes of pale sapwood run parallel across it, and the edge is softly eased all the way around.
The tree grew near downtown San Luis Obispo. Redwoods get huge, and this one was planted where it was always going to outgrow its spot, close to foundations, sidewalks and plumbing. Fifty or sixty years on, it had to come down. Right tree, wrong place.
The lazy Susan
Set flush in the center and outlined by a thin routed circle. The grain and the sapwood stripes carry straight across it, so turned back to square, the figure lines up with the rest of the top.
The base
Two thick slab panels cross and interlock. Each one has an hourglass profile, flaring wide at the floor and again under the top, with a large circle cut through where they meet. We built the top and the base in our own shop.
