The tree behind it
No photo filter. This is the slab.
Silver maple, milled May 23, 2022.
Where the tree grew: A neighborhood in Anaheim, California.
What to know about it
Where the trunk forked, this maple grew around a pocket of its own bark and folded it into the wood. That bark pocket sits at the crotch end of the slab, with a natural check running down from it into the fork. It is the clearest record on the slab of where the tree split into two leaders, and it is where the grain gets most interesting, sweeping and rippling around the crotch. A few knots run down the center of the face where branches once grew, the largest near the fork. We think this is the best part of the slab. If you would rather, the check can be left open, filled, or splined.
